This is the third piece in my California Coastal Series. While photographing boats in Newport Beach, I captured this scene of friends enjoying an afternoon sail.
For my interpretation, I transformed the group into a couple and removed the background, allowing the sailboat and its passengers to become the entire focus of the composition.
The Inspiration
A Look Behind the Stitches
The back of a thread painting tells a story all its own. While the front reveals the finished image, the back shows how it was created.
You can see how I stitched each area separately: the sky, the water, and the sails, using the direction of the stitches to create movement. Those changing stitch patterns are what give the water its gentle ripples and the sky its sense of motion.
From the back, the piece almost looks like a sketch, revealing the structure hidden beneath the finished artwork.
