Sometimes a title comes long before the artwork.
Pieces of a Dream was one of those ideas. I knew the title first, but I didn't yet know what the finished piece would look like.
I began by creating a complete textile from jewel-toned blue silks with a coordinating blue and purple yarn couched across the surface. Then came the hardest part.
I made the first cut.
The textile was divided into irregular pieces and carefully reassembled on a fine net so that every piece returned to its original position—but with space between them. The result transformed a single, continuous surface into fragments that still belonged together.
Looking back, I'm sure the title itself dictated the process. A dream is often remembered in pieces—connected, yet separated by gaps. Somehow, cutting the artwork apart became the only way to express that idea.
To complete the presentation, I rescued an old frame that was destined to be discarded. After wrapping it with quilt batting and strips of the same silk used in the artwork, I stitched the piece directly into the frame so it appears to float within it.
The frame became part of the artwork itself, giving new life to something that might otherwise have been discarded.
