When two of my favorite subjects collide

I have an entire body of work devoted to music, so it seemed inevitable that music would eventually find its way into the Soft Rocks Series.

Rock Music brings two very different kinds of "rock" together: the soft, needle-felted rocks that define this series and the music that has been an important part of my artistic life.

Making the Frame

The construction is similar to Heart of Stone.

I started with two pieces of poplar cut to the same size. On the top piece, I cut the shape of a musical note using my scroll saw. I then glued the two pieces together, creating a recessed space within the wood.

Once the frame was complete, I made an assortment of needle-felted rocks and arranged them inside the musical note.

The result is a musical note made from rocks, but, of course, these aren't rocks at all.

They're wool.

About the Soft Rocks Series

The Soft Rocks Series began with my fascination with the many meanings and expressions associated with rocks and stones. I take those familiar phrases and ideas literally, transforming them into sculptural objects.

With Rock Music, the connection was especially natural. Music has been an important subject throughout my work, and the word "rock" gave me the perfect excuse to bring these two worlds together.
