This dragon had a long journey before finally coming to life.
My original plan was to create a dragon sitting triumphantly on a mountain of treasure. But as I worked on the design, it simply wasn't coming together the way I had envisioned. Rather than force it, I set the idea aside and transformed it into a different piece featuring a dragon perched atop a castle tower.
That castle-tower theme eventually evolved into a dramatic dragon coat. The outside featured dragons guarding their towers, while the inside was lined with gold silk dupioni and covered with piles of treasure.
After seeing the coat, one of my longtime collectors told me she had something for me. At our next show, she arrived carrying a bag filled with old jewelry. Since the coat already contained all the treasure it could hold, her generous gift became the perfect excuse to return to my original idea.
This time, the dragon finally found his treasure.
The vintage jewelry became part of the dragon's glittering hoard, giving the piece both sparkle and a story.
It's Mine, All Mine was later selected for Encrustations, a special exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival featuring art quilts embellished with found objects.
